Using a Dog Tracker or GPS Collar – What Actually Helps on Walks
A clear look at when GPS trackers are useful, what they can and cannot do, and how to use them well
GPS trackers and smart collars have become popular tools for dog owners. They can provide useful information, especially for dogs that roam or have unreliable recall. They are not a substitute for training or good management, but when used thoughtfully they can add an extra layer of safety and insight on walks.
What a tracker can and cannot do
A GPS tracker tells you where the dog is, or where it has been. It does not improve recall, stop the dog from running toward a road, or replace good lead skills. It is a location tool, not a training tool. Understanding that distinction prevents unrealistic expectations.
When a tracker is genuinely useful
Trackers come into their own for dogs with a history of bolting, dogs that hunt or range widely on walks, or dogs being walked in large open areas with limited visibility. They also give peace of mind if a long line fails or a gate is left open. For dogs with solid recall and reliable lead manners, the benefit is often smaller.
Real-world limitations to keep in mind
Battery life, signal coverage, subscription costs and the bulk of the device on a small dog’s neck all matter. Some trackers work poorly under dense tree cover or in remote valleys. Others lag by several seconds or minutes. Test the device thoroughly in the places you actually walk before relying on it.
How to use the information well
Live tracking is most useful when you need to locate a dog that has already slipped out of sight. Historical route data can also show patterns – preferred paths, sudden speed changes, or places the dog tends to linger. Use that information to adjust your walking plan rather than simply collecting data.
Pair technology with training and management
A tracker should sit alongside, not instead of, solid recall training and sensible lead use. If your dog’s recall is still unreliable, a long line and the techniques in our Off-Lead or On-Lead guide remain more important than any gadget.
